In another high profile transfer this summer, Manchester United surprised the football world as they sensationally swooped in to sign the Portuguese from Italian Giants Juventus. Ronaldo had been linked to a number of clubs this window with local rivals Manchester City looked favourites to get his signature.

The rumour of Ronaldo joining City left many United fans fuming and invited some angry reactions on social media. But things took a U-turn when the Red Devils announced his return to the club since he left for Real Madrid in 2009.

It has also been widely reported that Sir Alex Ferguson had a major role to play in convincing the player to join United. In an emotional statement he posted on his Facebook page, Ronaldo gave his former boss a special mention saying, “Sir Alex, this one is for you…”

The deal would see the 36-year-old earn £385,000 a week, according to Daily Mail, making him the highest-earning United player. His salary, however, would be £6million-a-year less than what he was earning at Juventus.

Ronaldo, having signed a two-year contract, will stay until 2023 with an option to extend for a further year, subject to international clearance. The five-time Balon D’or winner is set to team up with his former Real Madrid teammate Raphael Varane who also joined United in the summer.

Talking about the latest signing, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said, “You run out of words to describe Cristiano. He is not only a marvellous player but also a great human being. To have the desire and the ability to play at the top level for such a long period requires a very special person. I have no doubt that he will continue to impress us all and his experience will be so vital for the younger players in the squad. Ronaldo’s return demonstrates the unique appeal of this club and I am absolutely delighted he is coming home to where it all started.”
